Ever since January you’ve been trying to kick-start your year or just make some simple life changes. I find it impossible to make any drastic life changes during the months when I just want to be cozy in my pajamas! That’s why I’m putting forth, right here, right now, a motion to make June the month to throw out your old habits and step into a new mindset! Here are tricks, tips, hacks and recipes to help you on your way.
Did you know that a whopping 18% of your home’s energy use comes from water heating!
Set your hot water heater to 120 degrees.
The average household uses 64 gallons of water a day.1
By installing low-flow shower and faucet heads, you can save between 25% – 60%.
Water heating is the second largest expense in your house.
Wash all your clothes in cold water.
- Extra Fact -
A small leak of one drip a second can cost $1 a day.
Whether you are at the beach, on a picnic or at a park, a good way to keep your valuables (phones, money and credit cards) safe is to store them in unassuming containers. Old sunscreen bottles are a great way to store your cash!
Nothing says summer like watermelon, and nothing stops you from being hotter than a cooler. Why not combine the two and mix up this refreshing Watermelon Cooler!2

Avoid high speeds
For every 5 mph above 50 mph, it's like paying an additional $0.19 per gallon of gasoline!
Combine your errands
Several short trips from a cold start use twice as much fuel as one trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm!
Turn off your engine ...
if you plan on being parked for more than 10 seconds. Idling can use a quarter to a half-gallon of fuel per hour!
June 21 Is International Yoga Day!
A healthy body is a limber body. A limber body creates a strong body. A strong body builds a strong mind. A strong mind keeps you focused on your goals. Goals are good. Flexible goals are better. Be flexible with these great morning stretches.4
Lace your fingers together and raise your hands above your head, palms facing upward. Hold for 10 seconds.
To stretch the muscles on the right side of your neck, turn your left ear over to your left shoulder and hold for 20 seconds. Repeat on the other side to stretch out your left side.
Make sure that when you do this stretch your pelvis is square (keep your hips centered and flat).
June is just a memory, and now we’ve really hit our stride as we begin burning the summer sunlight. Days are longer and weekends can’t get here quick enough. The hardest part of July is remembering to do the little stuff that keeps your body and mind strong for the other 11 months. Stay focused. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. But more importantly, stay committed to a healthy and frugal lifestyle!
Here are the five things you should eat every day to keep your body firing on all cylinders.
Low-fat dairy products, legumes, chicken breast, fish and tofu are healthy choices.
Whole grains, sweet potatoes and beans all work great on your plate.
Avocados, seeds, olive oil and nuts will keep you out of foggy ruts.
Raspberries, broccoli, peas and barley will prevent your stomach from getting upset.
Eight 8-ounce glasses a day. You can do it.
Speaking of water. Sometimes you need to jazz a drink up. Green tea is also very good for hydration and is the base for this summer elixir.
Pineapple and Thyme Iced Tea 1
- 8 bags green tea
- 2 sprigs fresh thyme
- ½ fresh pineapple
- Boil 4 cups of water in a medium saucepan. Turn off heat and add the tea bags and thyme. Let steep for 4 minutes. Stir. Discard the tea bags and cool.
- Discard the thyme from the iced tea after it’s cool. Stir in the pineapple and 4 cups cold water. Serve over ice with additional thyme, if desired.

Pick a sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
Choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum.
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure.
Reapply every two hours (40 minutes when in the water).
Look for lotions that contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, Mexoryl SX or avobenzone 3%. All are FDA approved to block UVA and UVB rays.2
Use one oz. to cover exposed areas of body.
On the off chance you fail to heed my advice on sunscreen, here’s a great way to put a chill on your sunburn. Fill an ice cube tray with some aloe vera gel, freeze it and then pop a cube out and rub all over the affected parts of your body. It’ll feel great and prevent your skin from peeling.

The holidays are right around the corner (sort of). Start saving now to prevent stress later. Here are some easy tips to get you started.

Set up a Christmas account with your financial institution to keep your funds separated.
Start collecting change. See a penny, pick it up and put it away.
Use credit card reward points you acquire from July until December for presents only.
