Saving money might sound like an exercise in denial, but for habitual savers it’s more like a game. Instead of doing without, they know which expenditures are priorities and seek out the most economical ways of buying the things they really want. They see themselves as savvy spenders.
Do you want to be a savvy spender? If you’re really serious about getting your expenses under control, take a look first at where the money goes. Start a list of every penny spent over a month’s time: everything from rent or mortgage to impulse purchases at conveniences stores. Look over the list at the end of the month and lump them into three categories:
Category A: Absolute essentials (housing, food, transportation, etc.)
Category B: Discretionary, things that are important but not absolutely essential (clothes, high-speed Internet connections, cell phone, etc.)
Category C: Coulda done without (things you would trade back for the money if given the chance)
Categories A and C are easy to manage. With major adjustments, such as moving, you might reduce the cost of items in A. Start eliminating items from the C list and you already get a leg up on saving money.
But Category B requires some creativity, study and consumer smarts. Can you spend only half as much on clothes overall if you try discount shopping? Might your cell phone minutes be reduced? If a meal made at home costs only $4.00, but you typically spend $12 at a takeout restaurant, how often each month can you make the switch home? Can a coat of paint make that cast-off bookcase look just as cool as something you saw in a store listed for $120? Can you use the Internet to find slightly used electronic devices and goods?
In the end it boils down to your priorities and an ability to delay gratification – save for that vacation later this year by brown bagging your lunch until then. For tips on money management and online loans, see the following:
