Money Monica on Cable TV and Payday Loans

Q&A: Can Using a Payday Loan and Cutting Cable Bills Happen?

Money Monica is a regular gal, someone who works and scrimps and saves and spends (wisely). Today she addresses how to cut your television cable expenses.

Dear Money Monica: We just got a $400 cable bill! It includes broadband Internet, which my children need for school, but this is how much we pay for entertainment these days! I don’t have $400 to pay the bill, but don’t want to pay a pricey disconnection-reconnection fee, either. Any ideas on what to do? – TV Has Educational Value

Dear THEV: They say Americans watch six hours or more of TV a day. I don’t know anyone who actually sits and watches television that much, but we all have our favorite shows we like to tune into while doing other things, I suppose.

First, understand that you are not given just one choice on how you get television entertainment, including those channels we think of as cable, not broadcast. Here are a couple of alternatives:

  • Watch it on your computer via streaming video – While you may not want to sit at a desk to watch TV, you really don’t have to do it that way. You can hook a laptop up to a big screen TV and see it there. Or you can get a streaming video box. Thousands of shows are available this way (sometimes with a one-day delay from when cablecast).
  • Try over-the-air network shows – Surprisingly, the networks are starting to produce more interesting shows, even sports programming.
  • Out of market live, streaming sports programming – If you live in-market and your home team doesn’t have a seat sellout, this might not work. But live games out-of-market can be downloaded at annual subscriptions of $45 to $175.

A payday loan can get you out of a jam if you can’t pay that $400 bill right now. How much you can borrow depends on your income and the state in which you reside (examples are Michigan allows $600, Florida is $500 and in Texas it’s $1,800). The online applications make it a five-minute task, with the money arriving by electronic deposit into your checking account by the next business day.* You shouldn’t use these paycheck cash advance loans every month — just when unexpected expenses empty your bank account before all the regular bills are paid. When you use one, think about ways in which to reduce expenses in the future, such as by cutting cable expenses.
